Training programs

The following programs support the Korean studies and short-term training of foreigners.

Fellowship for Field Research (Support for Korean studies)
  • Eligible applicants

    Overseas researchers of Korean studies or comparative/case studies of Korea-related topics in the humanities or social sciences fields who meet at least one of the following requirements:

    • (1) Ph. D. candidate who has completed his/her requisite coursework and is to write his/her doctoral dissertation
    • (2) Lecturer or researcher with at least 5 years of experience in teaching or research at a university or research institute
    • (3) Assistant professor or an individual currently in a professional/research field with at least 10 and under 20 years of experience ※ For Ph.D. degree holders only
    • (4) Associate/full professor or an individual currently in a professional/research field with at least 20 years of experience ※ For Ph.D. degree holders only
    • ※ Even if their research topic is related to Korea, researchers in the natural sciences and engineering fields are not eligible
  • Number of recipients
    Approximately 30 individuals per year
  • Benefits
    KRW 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 per month depending on research experience

    From July 1 to August 31 of the year before the program starts

Fellowship for Korean Language Training (Support for Korean studies)
  • Eligible applicants
    • Undergraduate students studying Korean studies (or Korean language) as a major or minor in one of the following areas: Southeast Asia, Central Europe, CIS, Middle East, Central and South America, Africa
    • M.A./Ph.D course students whose major or minor is in a Korea-related field and who has a detailed research plan on a topic related to Korea
    • University professors, lecturers, and researchers who are currently teaching Korea-related courses or conducting relevant research at a university or research institute (non-profit, government-funded, university-affiliated, etc.) or professors, lecturers, or researchers with expert qualification who are teaching Korean language courses as part of higher education
    • Professionals: persons in charge of Korea-related activities in the arts and culture field
    • Persons who have completed the KF Korean Language and Culture Training programs for Diplomats and wish to take advanced courses on Korean language training (number of fellowship recipients are assigned separately)
  • Number of recipients
    Approximately 40 individuals per year
  • Benefits
    • Living expenses (provided on a monthly basis)
      - Undergraduates, B.A., or M.A. degree holders, or individuals with less than 3 years of related experience: KRW 1,000,000
      - Ph.D. candidates and individuals with at least 3 years of relevant career experience: KRW 1,200,000
    • Entry subsidy: KRW 300,000 (one-time subsidy)

    • Health insurance (accident insurance and medical care insurance provided through Korean insurance companies)

Program for Ethnic Koreans from the CIS Region (Support for short-term training)
  • Eligible applicants
    Ethnic Koreans from the CIS region
  • Benefits
    Invitations extended to independence activists (or their descendants), forced migrants or forced laborers (or their descendants), those who have made significant contributions to the overseas Korean community, etc. Through this program, invited participants come to Korea to enjoy a time of reconciliation, comfort, and encouragement and to celebrate their Korean heritage. (duration: 5 days)

Duo-Korea (Support for short-term training)
  • Eligible applicants
    Undergraduate (B.A.) students or graduate (M.A.) students from any of the 30 European (ASEM) countries
  • Benefits
    Provided to pairs of students. Provision of EUR 8,000 to each pair of students (EUR 4,000 per student) for 4 months (1 semester), up to 1 semester (4 months)
